Located 26 miles (41 km) west of downtown DC, Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is near Sterling, Virginia and served by Metro’s Silver Line. A major hub for United Airlines, Dulles handles passenger, cargo, and general aviation, and offers rentals from Avis/Budget, Enterprise/National/Alamo, Hertz/Dollar/Thrifty, and Sixt. Opened in 1962, Dulles now hosts nearly 50 airlines, 125 gates, and 150+ global destinations. The Main Terminal has 4 ticketing islands (United fully occupies Counter 4), pre-security shops and restaurants, and the new Capital One Lounge. Post-security, follow signs to the AeroTrain. The AeroTrain connects the Main Terminal to Concourses B (one direction) and A/C (the other), with access to D via walk from C or mobile lounge. Ride time is under 6 minutes at 42 mph (68 km/h). Trains run every 2 minutes most of the day. Concourses A & B serve most airlines (except United mainline) and host lounges for Air France/KLM, BA, Etihad, Lufthansa, Turkish, and Virgin Atlantic. United Express uses ground-level gates here. A new Concourse E with AeroTrain access opens 2026. Concourses C & D are United-exclusive and date to the 1980s. Some international arrivals clear here; others transfer via mobile lounge to the Main Terminal’s International Arrivals Building. The AeroTrain overshoots the concourse; passengers walk back via the “PenFed tunnel.” C/D also host a Polaris Lounge, 2 United Clubs, and 16 hardstands. Dulles is one of the last airports using mobile lounges. These vintage, Saarinen-era vehicles connect the concourses to the Main Terminal above-ground, offering God-tier plane spotting. Back in the Main Terminal, the H and Z gates serve regional airlines like Southern Airways Express. Baggage Claim includes the USO Lounge—thank y’all for your service—and international arrivals. There are 15 baggage belts, with 7 arrival doors: standard pickup at street level, rideshares/offsite services one level below. The ramps also lead to Metro, Garage 1, and Kiss & Fly. Metro accepts SmarTrip® cards (physical or in your mobile wallet) and contactless credit/debit. As of June 2025, Silver Line trains run to both Downtown Largo (formerly Largo Town Center) and New Carrollton, MD. Expect about 50 minutes into DC for both.
