I just competed at the 2024 Blacksmith World Championships that was put on by the @wcbfarrier at Spruce Meadows. In this video you'll get to see tongs being built by competitors in a 30 minute time limit. To begin the class we start with what's called a "lollipop". And a "lollipop" is a piece of 3/4" inch round steel that has been drawn down to create the reigns and at the end is 3" inches of the round stock that will the used to create the working end of the tongs. Tong anatomy includes- the jaw, the boss, the rivet, the shoulder, the reign, offset, and many different variations in which you can make the jaws be shaped as. So the main thing that tongs need to do is, hold steel or the stock its intended for, they need to articulate freely with no binding up, and then be a good set of tongs they should be a pair where both sides are identical to each other. Once the 30 minute class is finished, the tongs will be judged by two gentleman chosen to be the judges of this years world championships- Michael Saunders (from Australia) and Michael Kukkonen (from Denmark) and placed accordingly along those guidelines. Hope you enjoy seeing the process of tongs being made by the best in the world and I'll also take you along seeing competitors from across the world competing at the 2024 World Championships.
