ECG Screening of Patients With Portal Hypertension for Liver Transplant Evaluation

Charles D. Burger, MD, Medical Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, reviews his article appearing in an upcoming issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he found the prevalence of portopulmonary hypertension in patients referred for liver transplant evaluation was considerably lower than previous studies. His study found around 1% compared to that historically published of up to 9%. Dr. Burger notes the reason for the decrease was unclear but speculates one possibility is that the more readily available medical treatments for pulmonary hypertension may have altered the referral pattern for liver transplantation.
