The film starts with a familiar view, as steam locomotive King Arthur departs Rudyard with the first Lollipop Special for 2023, under the famous signal gantry, almost the same sequence seen by many on the much viewed live station camera on YouTube. After this, we are mostly in the section of line between Lakeside Loop and Hunthouse Wood, a long way from Rudyard and its busy station and platform two cafe (nice cup of tea and all kind of cakes, highly recommended) with both King Arthur and Lady Jane Gray in fine form. The last two scenes were filmed between Dam station and Lakeside Loop. I've visited Rudyard many times, and I've watched a great number of films of the railway, and although there's some skilled film making on show, I've always felt disappointed they don't show enough of the stunning scenery, the unique atmosphere of Rudyard. I've always ended up wishing they'd left the camera rolling longer, and ventured further. I wanted to make a film that shows the whole picture, the setting and the trains, that means trees, ferns, hydrangeas, rocks, birdsong, the vast lake, boats, paddleboards, ducks, people, dogs, bikes, scooters, and the sound of the steam engine echoing before it comes into view, the anticipation, then the great sight of the train sparkling in the dappled sunlight, steaming by, the chuffing of the engine and clattering carriages filling the woodland with sound that builds to a crescendo then fades slowly and leaves the land quiet again, only the songs of the robin, dunnock, chaffinch and chiffchaff remaining, the tiny birds in their vast emerald cathedral. Some people like a film that's a procession of trains from easy locations, with close ups of the loco and coaches thrown in occasionally. If that's all they want then that's fine, this film is not made for those people. I prefer to seek out different angles, to hike up hills, lie down in hedgrows, even climb trees, to show the train in its landscape. And what a wonderful location this is, a Midlands paradise! There's many a calm moment in this movie, space to relax, a reverie, but a train is always nearby, and I hope you enjoy watching, and feel inspired to visit Rudyard and its enchanting steam railway. Big thanks to Henry Kelsall and the railway crew for their warm welcome and hospitality. The railway, a 10.25" gauge line, runs on part of the old North Staffordshire Railway route between Leek and Macclesfield, and is managed by Ian Burgess. This is a longer version of the film, by request, that has footage of SJ and me travelling back to Rudyard for our cup of tea. Big thanks for all those who enjoyed the film and asked if there was any more footage, and those who wanted to see SJ more than once. It was a brilliant day in Rudyard. One of our very best.
