Just got arrested? Don’t make it worse. After 31+ years of defending cases in Central Florida, I’ve seen two common missteps that can destroy your defense. In these situations, we want to avoid making a problem out of this problem. Let's dive in. First of all, you've got to stop talking. Here are some things you could say to the officer, like, “Officer, I’d like to remain silent” or “I want an attorney”. These phrases are magic—they legally must stop questioning. Don’t worry if you can’t afford a lawyer. Asking for one still locks down your right to remain silent. My second concern is that some of you cannot stop posting your life on social media. Look, I love posting stuff as much as the next guy, but the problem is that platforms like Telegram, Facebook or Snapchat keep your messages and snaps, even if you think they vanish. Police can subpoena your records, so avoid discussing or “confessing” anything online. Steer clear of these two mistakes, and you won’t be handing the prosecution the evidence they need. If you’re facing charges in Central Florida, call me. I’ve been at this since 1993, defending thousands of clients.
