PHETCHABURI, THAILAND - Petchaburi, Central Thailand, is home to many palmyra palm trees. They are also known as sugar palm or toddy palm trees and grow in plantations. I decided to visit one of these sugar palm orchards to see what is sugar palm and how palm sugar is made. It’s an amazing tree, with so many uses, and so important throughout Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia and India. It was very fun to visit the traditional sugar palm farm, especially in rural Thailand. It really did feel like a special experience and I was the only foreign tourist there. It seemed to be a great place to come with the family and learn about the farm. You could also buy products like the palm sugar, palm juice and even Thai food. I first saw this fruit in Cambodia in 2017 during my first trip to Asia. My guide took a photo of me with it, but I had no idea what it was. So when I had the opportunity to visit the traditional Thai farm, I decided to go and find out more. Before visiting this palmyra palm tree fruit plantation, I didn’t know all the different uses of this amazing fruit and tree.
