The Month of Av. From Darkness Comes Redemption

To learn more visit https://www.HebronFund.org Shalom my friends this is Simcha Hochbaum of Hebron standing outside the Maarat HaMachpela. This Shabbat, we usher in the month of Hodesh Av. Hodesh Menachem Av. It's a time, the Talmud tells us, when the month of Av enters, one diminishes amount of joy. It's a time that we remember the calamities, the tragedies, the destruction that befell the Jewish people during this month. Whether it's the destruction of the First and Second Temple, the Spanish Expulsion, beginning of World War one. the beginning of World War I, so much of the Holocaust took place during this period of time of the Jewish month of Av. At the same time, sometimes in Judaism, there is always that which is revealed and that which is hidden. We sometimes divide our days into the regular weekdays. We have Shabbat and Yom Tov which is a much higher level. And then we say the lowest level is the days of brokenness. The days of fasting. The days of calamity. The truth is, sometimes in that calamity, God has something much bigger and deeper waiting for us. We know we have our five holidays that we read about last Shabbat. Hashem is somehow waiting to reveal to us a holiday that has yet to come down to the world. And that is a holiday of geula where moshiach is born on Tisha B’Av. The holiday that yet is not written. But we're making vessels for it and we long and we yearn during these days. We cry over the destruction and we realize everything we went through, and all the destruction that we've seen, is only preparation for that one great day. When we have to build a new building, sometimes we have to destroy the old, and therefore then we cry over the old. We know it's just a preparation for something so much greater and bigger. Please God let this month of Av -- Av also means to long and to yearn -- bring down that great, great holiday of geula shaleima. And all that longing and yearning for that closeness with Hashem, for the Holy Temple, for the priests, for the Sanhedrin, for prophecy, should be able to bring down that light that has yet to be revealed in this world.
