Bayer’s Hold My Beer Masterclass Bayer Leverkusen finally learned to keep a lead without giving their fans heart attacks—well, mostly. Facing an ambitious but error-prone St. Pauli, they got the job done, but not without a few close calls. The Plot Florian Wirtz decided he was the main character, scoring a cool goal in the 5th minute after nutmegging Eric Smith like it was a training session. Granit Xhaka, the assist king, provided the magic. Then Jonathan Tah thought, “I want in on this,” and headed one home in the 21st minute. St. Pauli, meanwhile, showed up with a high defensive line that screamed, “Please, play through us!” After halftime, Morgan Guilavogui was like, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.” He danced around Leverkusen’s defense in the 84th minute, scoring a screamer that made everyone think, “Could this actually happen?” Spoiler alert: it didn’t. Andreas Albers tried to channel his inner hero with a last-minute header but only found the side netting. Flashbacks and Almost Fails Bayer fans had Holstein Kiel from a 2-0 lead they blew earlier in the season (end 2-2). This time, Xabi Alonso’s squad barely avoided a rerun. Tah’s early game oopsie (a botched chip pass!) almost gifted St. Pauli a goal, and VAR controversially denied a penalty to Bayer. At least Wirtz stayed entertaining, even when his second-half attempts were more "meh" than magnificent. St. Pauli: The Little Team That Could (Almost) The Kiezkicker squad was all heart but no sharpness. Guilavogui hustled harder than a freelancer with rent due, scoring late and creating chaos. But without the finishing touch, their “never give up” spirit ended in “nice try, better luck next time.” The Takeaway Bayer got their “ugly win,” showing why they’re champions—even when it’s messy. Meanwhile, St. Pauli left with heads held high, thinking, “We almost made them sweat!” Man of the Match? Jonathan Tah: scoring, defending, and proving he can multitask like a pro.
