Matthew Gillespie pattern Gillespie rifle. The Gillespie rifle makers of East Fork, North Carolina were known for quality built rifles. Some, like this one, were minimalistic tools of survival while others were more ornate works of art. There is a charm to the simplistic approach, and this rifle has much beauty and charm. Matthew Gillespie lived from July 1788 to May 1871. He married the daughter of an ironworks owner, Philip Sitton in 1810. His wife’s name was Elizabeth Sitton. Matthew made quality rifles and was one of the best known rifle makers in Eastern North Carolina. Matthew and Elizabeth had five sons, and all of them went into the gun making trade. Rifles were being made by Matthew at Sitton Iron Forge, Mills River N.C. all the way up to the Civil War. No two rifles were identical. The family attended Mills River Baptist Church. My Gillespie rifle was built by Don Bruton, a master gunmaker in North Carolina. You can reach him at booneguns1760@aol.com. For a full study on Gillespie rifles, please read T. Dennis Glazener’s book “The Gillespie Gunmakers of East Fork NC” ISBN:978-0-692-30126-5 published March 2004 and revised second printing November 2014.
