Each song marks a turning point - from driving through the desert to driving yourself forward. From holding onto love to learning to let go. From fearing darkness to finding comfort in it. i wrote this song driving straight up through the heart of australia, through red dirt, long roads, and a silence that had a way of telling me the truth. my car was packed to the brim with everything i owned. i’d just left alice springs after two years living there, still grieving my dad, still figuring out how to leave a relationship that had stopped feeling right long before i had the courage to admit it. the middle is both literal and metaphorical. a song about physically driving straight up through the middle of australia, and also about going up the guts of life itself. about finally taking control when waiting no longer serves you. the inspiration for this song came to me sitting by my dad’s graveside in the alice springs cemetery, talking to him about everything i didn’t know how to say out loud. i remember humming the first lines there, just me, the desert wind, and this small sense of knowing that even though i didn’t feel ready, it was time to go. so i packed my car, filled it with everything i owned, and just started driving north from alice springs to my birthplace of katherine in the northern territory. the last time i drove that long stretch of road, it was into the night in january 2022. my granny, uncle, step-mum, baby sister and me, after we got the call that dad had passed away in a motorbike accident. the car was quiet, heavy. our worlds had shifted, and we had no idea what waited for us on the other end. fast forward a year and that 1180 km of me and the open road became a reckoning. a moment where i stopped waiting for the perfect time to begin again, and just decided to move. that’s where the melody came from, somewhere between red dirt, heat shimmer, and the quiet that only the desert knows. a year later, in 2024, i filmed this video driving back down through the middle, from darwin to adelaide, the same stretch of highway, only this time moving home to victoria to be with my mum for the summer, to rest, to heal, to start again. the whole clip follows that single road, the same one that’s carried me through every version of myself, a reminder that sometimes the only way through is straight up the middle. this song is for anyone who’s ever waited for the “right time.” for anyone who’s known something had to change but didn’t yet feel strong enough to change it. the truth is, you never really feel ready, you just have to go. 🎶 About the song: Written in the Northern Territory and finished in South America, The Middle is about growing up, taking risks, and trusting the road even when you don’t know where it’s leading. 📍 Filmed across: Darwin → Katherine → Alice Springs → Adelaide, Australia. 💬 Keywords: Australia road trip, Northern Territory drive, driving through the middle of Australia, Australian musician, indie folk, Missy Higgins, Angie McMahon, Maggie Rogers, acoustic storytelling, emotional songwriting, travel music, nature lovers, outback road film, women in music, self-growth, sober journey, Caprice Ariston, “The Middle” official video.
