According to legends, the festival is to commemorate the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Vamana and the demon king Mahabali, who is believed to be visited Kerala at the time of Onam. Mahabali (Mahābalī / Bali / Māveli) is a benevolent and generous daitya King. He ruled his kingdom without discrimination and also one of the demons (Asuras) in Hindu mythology, who temporarily possessed the amrit (nectar for eternal life) and became immune from death. After many wars, the invincible Bali came to power over the three worlds by defeating the angels (Devas). The lost Devas approached Lord Vishnu for saving them from his devotee Bali. After victory, King Bali conducted a Yajna where anyone's request will be granted during it. For the angels, Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of a dwarf Brahmin boy called 'Vamana' and reached the yajna spot. Bali offered anything to the saint boy- gold, cows, elephants, villages, food or whatever he wished. Vaman said that one must not seek more than one needs, and all he needed was 'three paces of land'. The demon king agreed it. Suddenly he grew to an enormous size and covered everything the king ruled over in just two paces. For the third pace, Bali offered his own head for him to step on. The saint, who is actually Lord Vishnu pleased in his loyalty and dedication. He revealed himself as Maha Vishnu and granted him a boon by which Bali could visit again once every year, the lands and people he ruled before. This revisit marks the festival of Onam as a reminder of the virtuous rule of Mahabali. The Onam celebrations mark the Malayalam New Year, which spread over twelve days of Chingam month- Atham, Chithira, Chothi, Visakham, Anizham, Thrikketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam, Thiruvonam, Avittam and Chathayam. The Atham day is the beginning of festivities at Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy temple in Kochi, which is considered as the focal center of Onam and the abode of Mahabali / Maveli. Onam is celebrated as a cultural festival with numerous festivities such as Athachamayam, Pulikali, Pookkalam, Onapottan (Maveli), Onasadya, Onakkodi, Onam Kali, Thumbithullal, Kummattikali, Onathallu, Onavillu, Thiruvonathoni etc. During Onam, people make a sculpture of Thrikkakara Appan (Onathappan / Vamanan) within the Pookkalam in their home and indulge in various games and dances. Vallamkali (Snake boat race) is another main event during Onam where numerous oarsmen row huge snake shaped boats.
