Mountains lie distant, waters mirror all in sight; Now listen: ten thousand whispers fade into the night. Petals fall like tears; I falter as I tread; My eyes are dry, my body lone—a wanderer unfed. Deer bolt past Su Terrace, through ruined walls they flee; All that remains is scarred and bare—a testament to misery. I marvel at Heaven and Earth, behold the pond’s fish swim; Their wither and their flourish probe the scene, both bright and dim. A single note from the pipa rings crisp upon the air: All blooms have lost their fragrance now—their beauty stripped bare. With brush I gift white snow; by starlit stream, clouds dwell— These form the story of my life, the truths I yearn to tell. A heart aflame with poetry needs no renown or fame; My spirit’s fervent longing stands sufficient for my name. A rare, untamed wanderer, whose loyalty outshines sun and moon, Proclaims himself a knower of fate—yet wanders free, immune. After dreaming on Wutai’s heights, I drift where currents bear, My vessel light, a carefree path, unconcerned by worldly care. A bold‐spirited sage of wine, I tread the common dust unbound, My spirit shines with starry fire, untethered to the ground. Cradling my inkstone, off go my boots—my restless heart runs deep, Drunk on words and longing, I surrender to the night’s keep. A mad immortal of Wu, proud-boned, sees through the world’s façade, His soaring spirit revels in delights no mortal might applaud. He trades a golden turtle for a cup of wine, recalling home’s embrace— Qing Ying. In autumn’s praise I lift my voice to lofty, songlike rhymes; My humble room cannot contain the echo of my climbs— I smile at dukes and ministers whose pomp cannot compete With verse that stands like pine and bamboo: evergreen, complete. Amid a world grown murky, I weep lament in muddy strife, My whole self soaked in sorrow’s mire—no respite in this life. Out of tune with common hearts, no kindred soul I find— And so I linger, one drifter, until one day I clear my mind. I craft my phrases painstakingly, pluck words like distant stars, Stumbling down a hardship’s road, a pilgrim bound by scars. Born like restless waves, I find my rest at Lean Poetry’s door, A pavilion thin and small, yet calling me to more. I play Jian’an’s lingering tunes—its spirit’s pulse endures, Each note a vessel holding grief, yet solace it ensures. For years atop Golden Terrace I have gleaned the relics lost— Forgotten lines and vanished names, retrieved at happy cost. In Chang’an’s throng of famed scholars, my fortune presses hard, Yet fate’s great weight cannot contain the thunder of my bard. I whirl my ink across the page, my hand a lightning rod— Those who hear my thunderous lines acclaim me son of God. I measure all the realm’s true men; my swirling brush conjures winds, Record their fleeting silhouettes—those brilliant, soaring minds. With ink as loom and script as thread, I weave a jeweled spread, A tapestry of splendid verse for posterity to read. Through tides of bureaucratic seas, I rise and fall again, Entrusting past to boundless seas at every farewell’s pain. My life is forged of prose and song—Heaven gifted me this art, A burning passion deep within, a flame no fate can part. A guest amid the verdant peaks, I chronicle clan by clan, Names of ten thousand households placed gently in my hand. I lift a cup of fragrant wine and watch the blossoms wake, Petals brighten, petals fade: a living, breathing ache. A thousand years, a single boat drifts by the Poetry Wall— Rain stops, the breeze grows crystal clear, and peace descends on all. I hear a child recite the scrolls, their voice both pure and strong, Bridge ancient lore to present day, ensuring stories long.
