B-LOU-msday: 9 Scylla And Charbidis - a chapter synopsis in under 10m

Part nine of a series of short synopses of the Chapters of Ulysses, with some odds and ends that occur to me thinking on the chapter. If you can afford it, please do support this, and my other on- and off- line projects at   / martinfrenchtheatre   - sign up by the end of June 2020, and I will record something for your answerphone or personal enjoyment. My professional FB page is to be found here -   / martinfrenchtheatre   EPISODE 9. Scylla And Charbidis TIME – 2pm SCENE – Library – The National Library on Kildare Street, beside the current Irish Parliament, and just beyond that, the Museum Bloom slipped into. COLOUR – NONE! TECHNIQUE – Whirlpools, Dialectic CORRESPONDENCES – The Rock – Aristotle Dogma The Whirlpool – Plato Mysticism London Ulysses – Socrates Jesus Shakespeare Telemachus Antinous SCIENCE / ART – Literature MEANING – Two Edged Dilemma ORGAN – Brain SYMBOLS – Hamlet, Shakespeare, Christ, Socrates, London & Stratford, Scholasticism and Mysticism, Plato & Aristotle, Youth and Maturity OTHER CHARACTERS – John Eglinton, George Russell, Mr. Best, PLOT – Urbane, to comfort them, the quaker librarian purred: – and we have, have we not, those priceless pages of Wilhelm Meister? Stephen Dedalus is in the library, all set to lecture on Shakespeare and Hamlet before a small crowd of his friends and some other literary types. They go back and forth at length about the various matters of Shakespeare, and Stephen finds himself defending Aristotle. We get a good insight into Stephen’s thoughts again – very highbrow, and very important or deep. Stephen compares Hamlet and Shakespeare’s biography. Mulligan arrives, and takes over to a degree, with Dedalus not getting a word in edgeways for a couple of pages – don’t forget this is Dedalus’ lecture. We hear someone is looking for a copy of the Kilkenny People – Bloom on the hunt for the ad for the House of Keyes he was talking about in Aeolus. Back to Dedalus and they are discussing the Will of Shakespeare, and the second best bed. Stephen finally hits his thesis, that Shakespeare in playing the ghost of the old king was speaking directly to his dead son Hamnet, rather than Hamlet – Eglinton puts it to him directly: “Do you believe your own theory? — No, Stephen said promptly.” Mulligan and Dedalus depart, mulligan taking one last snipe at Bloom ODDS & ENDS Trapped in a confine of intellect, dressed all in black, still ambivalently mourning a parent and thinking exclusively about Hamlet – am I talking about Hamlet or Dedalus? We start with Eglinton comparing all Irish endeavor for the worse with Shakespeare — Our young Irish bards, John Eglinton censured, have yet to create a figure which the world will set beside Saxon Shakespeare's Hamlet – It is fairly clear that Joyce is taking this head on. Shakespeare is the one English writer that Joyce respected, but like Shaw, was willing to square off against him. It is also worth noting that here, Joyce flirts with all manner of writing formats, giving us dramatic and poetic, prose and journalistic in the chapter. Noting all the contrasting pairings in the symbols pushes me on to an odd thought – Hamlet is very much a play about one person – no disrespect to Horatio – Stephen aspires to this, but Bloom more accurately represents this. Dedalus is still held back in many ways by his association with the clownish Mulligan. Perhaps we should see Dedalus more, at this moment, as another Don Quixote, with Mulligan as the cut-price Sancho Panza, distracting him from the ineluctable modality of the living.
