On this program you will see: 00:00 News 29:37 Rocío Ramos 36:42 Debbie Wingham Marbella Carnival has now confirmed its dates and full programme, which were presented last Monday. It is a celebration that consistently works well, which is why so much of the schedule is already well established. There will be the usual competition for carnival groups and, of course, plenty of events. Most are designed for everyone to enjoy out on the streets during one of Marbella’s most cheerful times of the year. Carnival does not pass San Pedro by — quite the opposite. The carnival calendar there was also presented on Monday, with events concentrated between the 13th and the 15th of February. It will be a full weekend dedicated to the festivities, where audiences will also be able to enjoy some of the best carnival groups from Cádiz. Strengthening safety is the Town Hall’s main goal, hence the announcement of new recruitment calls for the local security services. In total, there are around thirty posts for the Local Police, and a further eleven for the Fire Service. This was announced today at the Local Government Board meeting. They say the aim is to get ahead of operational needs. More than 350 trees will be planted across Marbella in the coming months, as part of the Town Hall’s ongoing drive to maintain strong green coverage throughout the city. Over the course of the current four-year term, the total number of new trees is expected to reach around 4,000. The focus now is on identifying the areas where planting is most urgently needed. The Town Hall activated its emergency response plan as Storm Leonardo moved through the area last Wednesday. Three people had to be rescued from the Río Verde after ignoring safety barriers that had been put in place to restrict access. There were also traffic disruptions across the city, and several trees had to be cleared after being brought down by strong winds, including a very large one in the Santa Marta neighbourhood. There were no major incidents in San Pedro Alcántara either. The main concern there has been the rivers and streams, especially the mouth of the Guadaiza River. Conditions have remained normal, although the Town Hall did deploy machinery as a precaution, in case it was needed. The beaches have been badly affected by the recent storms. The repeated yellow and orange weather alerts over the past few days have brought heavy swell, which, combined with strong winds, has shifted large amounts of sand. In some parts of the municipal coastline, it is estimated that up to ten metres of beach have been lost. These have been particularly demanding days for the Social Services Department. The severe weather has required teams to step up their efforts to support people who are homeless. Where necessary, temporary accommodation is being arranged during days like these. Support is also being provided to residents who cannot remain in their homes due to the risks posed by heavy rainfall. The values of sport lie at the heart of the “Solidarity Armbands” initiative, presented by the Spanish Association Against Cancer. The campaign has brought together around thirty sports clubs across the city, all of which will wear armbands to raise awareness of the disease and promote a more human-centred approach to cancer care. Around fifty young people from different countries are taking part in an event being held in Marbella this week, organised by the European Youth Parliament in Spain. The initiative promotes cultural exchange while also encouraging debate on issues such as entrepreneurship, among other topics.
