(20 Mar 1997) English/Nat The U-S tobacco industry, Thursday, was one step away from suffering a devastating blow - from within its own ranks. Liggett group - one of the smallest tobacco companies - is poised to make a dramatic agreement and settle lawsuits from 22 states against the tobacco sector. According to the National Association of Attorneys General Liggett is expected to make the unprecedented admission that cigarettes are both addictive are cause cancer. The consequences of such an admission may result in a floodgate of litigation against other tobacco companies. SOUNDBITE: (English) Were this agreement to be finalised, would be the first time that the stonewall has been breached that evidence is actually being made available from the companies themselves of the allegations that we have made.
