Multiday expeditions require significant planning and preparation. Food preparation, in particular, can be one of the most difficult aspects of expedition planning. When acclimating to high altitude the body has difficulty processing fats and protein, requiring some thoughtful modifications to the diet. In some instances it may be exceptionally difficult to ingest solid food, which requires calories to come in liquid form. In this video I outline what foods to take on high altitude trips above 20,000ft. I also look at overnight gear. This includes high altitude tents- including the MSR Advance Pro 2- and stove systems such as the MSR Reactor with a hot water bath pre-heat system. I talk about sleeping bags and emergency communication. Although the content of this video targets climbing in the Himalayas of Nepal on 6,000 meter peaks such as AmaDablam, Kyajo Ri, Island Peak (Imja Tse), Labuche East, and Mera Peak, it is also applicable to peaks such as Denali, Aconcagua, and 8,000 meter peaks such as Everest, Manaslu, and Cho Oyu.
