A land-locked country in East Africa, Uganda produces more food than it consumes. Yet, poverty still limits people’s access to nutritious food. The World Food Programme (WFP) in Uganda maintains an agile emergency response capacity, while supporting the Government through the school feeding programme. Children who come to school hungry, or chronically malnourished, have diminished abilities that lead to reduced school performance. In the long run, chronic undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies decrease individual potential and have adverse effects on productivity, incomes, and national development. School meals are a gateway to a better, healthier, and more prosperous future. Studies have shown that school meals programmes increase enrolment by an average of 9 percent, reduce the prevalence of anaemia by up to 20 percent in girls and according to Harvard University, every USD 1 invested in school meals yields an average of USD 9 in economic returns. School feeding in Karamoja School feeding is recognised in the Government of Uganda’s National Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan III. WFP is working with the Government of Uganda to implement school feeding in Karamoja (North-East Uganda).
