Bright birds can turn muddy fast in watercolor. In this tutorial, I show you how I paint a rainbow lorikeet by simplifying it into larger color families first, so the colors stay clean, vibrant, and believable. This rainbow lorikeet was a viewer request, and it was such a fun one to paint. Instead of chasing every tiny feather right away, I focus first on placing the main color areas, then I build values and add selective details at the end. In this video, you’ll see how I approach: big color blocks first cleaner transitions between bright colors layering without overworking using timing and rewetting to keep color fresh adding just enough detail to make the bird feel alive If you’d like the tracing template + reference photo, they’re on Patreon here: / beatrizfedeleart Let me know in the comments: what colorful bird should we paint next? #watercolor #watercolortutorial #birdpainting Chapters 00:00 Bright birds can get muddy fast 00:08 The plan: larger color families first 00:17 What this method helps you avoid 00:24 This rainbow lorikeet was a viewer request 00:46 Starting the head with the first color block 01:28 Patreon tracing template + reference photo 02:00 Blocking in the blue belly 02:38 Adding the first greens 03:30 Building color and value slowly 03:46 Why I like to place darks early 04:57 Shaping the beak 06:30 Starting the chest colors 07:25 Why color placement matters more than tiny details 08:38 Rewetting for a cleaner second layer 10:24 Moving into the next color blocks 12:49 The system: large color families first 14:21 Painting the branch 16:31 Adding selective dark details 17:31 Fast-forwarding repetitive tail details 17:58 Final detail stage 20:21 Why this works for very colorful birds 22:05 Final thoughts + Patreon mention 🎨 Want more watercolor tips & painting demos?
