Wonderful sunrise seen from Peralba, Sappada's highest peak at 2694 metres, which owes its name to the limestone rock with its characteristic white colour. Located on the border between Friuli and Veneto and between Italy and Austria, this peak, called Jochkouvl in Sappadine/Plodarisch and Hochweißstein in German, is the fourth highest in the Carnic Alps, after Coglians, Creta delle Chianevate and Cima di mezzo. It appears as an imposing mountain with a squat, rounded shape and forms the western part of the Peralba-Chiadenis-Avanza group. Given its position in the upper Sesis valley, it witnessed the Great War, as the remains of fortifications and trenches still present testify. On its slopes also springs the Piave, a river sacred to the homeland and also a protagonist of the conflict. This mountain is famous for the ascent of John Paul II who, on 20 July 1988, once at the summit, prayed at the foot of the Madonnina at the summit. The normal route now bears his name and passes through the Pier Fortunato Calvi hut, the highest in the region at 2164 metres. There are also two other routes: via the via ferrata Sartor, which climbs the southern slope, and via the west ridge, which offers a wide view of the Visdende valley. The start of the latter route is right next to the Sorgenti del Piave hut, located at 1830 metres, and at the source, a stone spring with a monument bearing the inscription 'Qui nasce il Piave' (Here the Piave is born), erected to mark the centenary of the Unification of Italy. From the summit there is a breathtaking panorama of the Sappada mountains (Rinaldo, Ferro, Creta Forata, Tuglia, Siera, Terze, Clap), the Pesarine Dolomites, the Tauern and the Austrian giants Großvenediger and Großglockner, the whole of Carnia (Sernio, Coglians, Volaia, Talm) and the Dolomites (Cridola, Antelao, Pelmo, Tofane, Cristallo, Marmarole, Sorapis, Marmolada, Croda dei Toni, Tre Scarperi). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Splendida alba vista dal monte Peralba, la cima più alta di Sappada con i suoi 2694 metri, che deve il suo nome alla roccia calcarea dal caratteristico colore bianco. Posta al confine tra Friuli e Veneto e tra Italia e Austria, questa cima, chiamata Jochkouvl in sappadino/plodarisch e Hochweißstein in tedesco, è la quarta più elevata delle Alpi Carniche, dopo Coglians, Creta delle Chianevate e Cima di mezzo. Appare come un'imponente montagna dalla forma tozza e arrotondata e costituisce la parte occidentale del gruppo Peralba-Chiadenis-Avanza. Data la sua posizione nell'alta Val Sesis, fu testimone della Grande Guerra, come testimoniano i resti di fortificazioni e trincee ancora presenti. Alle sue pendici inoltre nasce il Piave, fiume sacro alla patria ed anch'esso protagonista del conflitto. Questa montagna è famosa per l'ascesa di Giovanni Paolo II che, il 20 luglio 1988 una volta in cima si mise a pregare ai piedi della madonnina posta in vetta. La via normale porta ora il suo nome e passa per il rifugio Pier Fortunato Calvi, il più alto in regione con i suoi 2164 metri. Ci sono inoltre altre due vie di salita: per la ferrata Sartor, che sale sul versante meridionale, e attraverso la cresta ovest, che offre un'ampia visuale sulla Val Visdende. L'inizio di quest'ultima via si trova proprio accanto al rifugio Sorgenti del Piave, posto a 1830 metri e alle sorgenti, una fonte di pietra con un monumento che riporta la scritta "Qui nasce il Piave", eretto in occasione del centenario dell'Unità d'Italia.
