In this video, we explore the history and gameplay of Seven Cities of Gold, a classic, adventure game for the Commodore 64, and one of the very first examples of an open world. The C64 version of Seven Cities of Gold was designed by Danielle Bunten Berry and her team at Ozark Softscape, and published by Electronic Arts in 1984. In the game, you take on the role of a Spanish explorer, off to find the new world and claim riches and prestige for the Spanish Crown. The game is completely open, which is pretty unique for a game of that era. There are no scores, no objectives, or no quests. Exploration is done at the player's pace. In addition to exploring the lands, there are native tribes to interact with, secrets to discover, and many challenges to overcome. It's one of the very best games ever made for the Commodore 64, and it's ideas and implementation were years ahead of its time. I hope you enjoy the video!
