The final Experts on Air session of 2025 brought FilmEU members into the fascinating world of scenography in contemporary Slovak cinema. Held at FTF VŠMU in Bratislava, the session featured three of Slovakia’s most distinctive voices in set design: acclaimed scenographer Juraj Kuchárek and the creative duo TAKÉ scény — Dorota Volfová and Brigita Teplanová. Together, they offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at how historical worlds are researched, constructed, and brought to life on screen. This masterclass revealed what films often keep hidden: the meticulous research, detailed craftsmanship, and complex creative decisions that shape the visual authenticity of period dramas. Participants gained insight into how Slovak set designers work today, why period scenography is uniquely demanding, and how historical material is transformed into a contemporary cinematic experience. Drawing from their work across film, television, and theatre — including some of the most anticipated Slovak films of 2025 such as Duchoň, Potopa [Flood], Nepela, and Perla — the speakers discussed the creative and practical challenges of designing period sets within today’s local production realities.
