Global Horizons: Un Cafe Colombiano

Start your day with a Colombian gastronomic and cultural discussion, live from Bogotá. Global Experience programs give participants of all ages, interests, and backgrounds the chance to explore how international Kansas City is while answering two key questions – What's your global story? Do you get the chance to share it? As interesting as the topics and venues are, the best part of Global Experience programs are the hosts and participants who share their diverse knowledge and insights. About the Program Leader The World Tourism Organization, the Ibero-American General Secretariat, the Royal Academy of Gastronomy, and the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities honored Chef Charlie Otero for his commitment to researching and promoting Colombian gastronomy around the world and, in 2019, named him Ambassador of Ibero-American Gastronomy. Chef Otero led the inauguration of restaurant "La Escuela," a project associated with "La Escuela Taller de Artes y Oficios" from Bogotá, and continued to be an essential part of it as head chef and Colombian gastronomy professor. As a result of this project, Chef Otero has generated multiple professional and entrepreneurial opportunities for agricultural producers and future chefs. Chef Otero is the director of "Interno," a restaurant in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia powered by the inmates of San Diego Prison in the same city. "Interno" is the first restaurant in the world to function within a prison. As a gastronomic and culinary expert, he also leads the project "Vínculo Interno, Cocina que reconcilia" which offers gastronomic workshops in Bogotá's prisons. Additionally, Chef Otero created the menu for restaurant "La Comunión" en Cartagena de Indias, served as head consultant for the gastronomical projects of restaurants "Kazabe" and "La Provincia" in Cartagena, and opened his restaurant "La Cachaca" in Bogotá. Global Horizons The International Relations Council has held space for global conversations that matter in Kansas City for more than 65 years. Staying home hasn't kept us from traversing the world or connecting around timely international themes and topics – if anything, opportunities have been broader, deeper, and more inclusive.
