1/ Miss Kittin In the 1970s Caroline Herve listened with passion to her parents diverse record collection that included Genesis, Miles Davis, Maria Callas, and much more. In 1991 Caroline became Miss Kittin, one of the most important figures of French electronic music of the past twenty years. In 2013 the DJ, singer, songwriter is still putting dancers on the floor moving to her unique mix of styles, genres, and rhythms. CANAPE catches her in New York with new work spinning. 2/ "Amour" by Michael Haneke Young love is a popular theme from Romeo and Juliet to the latest sitcom. But what of mature love? Winner of the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, the 2012 European Film Award as Best Film, and many other international prizes, Amour directed by Michael Haneke follows the last months of a devoted Parisian couple in their eighties as played by French film icons Jean Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva. Noted critic Annette Insdorf guides CANAPE through the art of this humanist masterpiece. 3/ Sans Objet / Aurélien Bory It's safe to say that man and machine have a complicated relationship. Friend or foe? Dream or nightmare? French artist Aurelien Bory explores more dimensions of the relationship than can be named in his piece Sans Objet, recently performed at BAM in New York. CANAPE talks with the French artist whose dizzying work draws from theatre, dance, robotics, circus, acrobatics, visual art, and more. 4/ Matisse at the Metropolitan Museum Writing in The Nation in 1949, the critic Clement Greenberg called Henri Matisse a "self-assured master who can no more help painting well than breathing." The facts were actually a bit different. Unbeknownst to many, painting had rarely come easily to Matisse. Throughout his career, he questioned, repainted, and reevaluated his work. T he current exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Matisse: In Search of True Painting explores the great artists need throughout his career copy and repeat the same scenes and themes. CANAPE explores the issue with curator Rebecca Rabinow. 5/America, A Reverie In the summer of 2010, photographer Lena Herzog traveled to Washington, D.C., to document Glenn Beck's Restore Honor Rally, while French photographer Marc Valesella traveled to Arizona to capture the protests around the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, an immigration law criticized for racial profiling. They both had the same idea in mind: to document the rallies that define the social and political climate since the historic election of Barack Obama. The result is the exhibit America: A Reverie, a stirring trip into the dark side of the American Dream. CANAPE queries Lena Herzog about the project. (Taped: 02/20/13) Since 1996, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and CUNY TV have produced together one of the few French programs to appear on American television: Canapé. Stylish and modern, Canapé is the only program entirely devoted to French cultural events in New York and the United States. This monthly half-hour show includes film releases, book translations, exhibitions, festivals, ballets, concerts and theater productions. Canapé is seen on the third Thursday of the month in a French-only version and repeated the fourth Thursday of the month in an English-subtitled version.
