What more can be said about this fantastic and iconic drum part that hasn’t already been said and discussed? Well, one thing I’d like to say is that I truly think Ringo is mistaken when he has stated that he played the main tom pattern of this song starting on the floor tom and going up to the high tom. The evidence from the recording itself just doesn’t point to that at all. The pitches of the toms indicate that he clearly played it descending, starting on the 8x12 tom (highest pitched) with the very last note played on the 16x16 floor tom (lowest pitched) There have been instances on other songs where he played fills starting on the floor tom and going up to the high tom; “Day Tripper” and “You Won’t See Me” are two that immediately come to mind. Those are very clear when you hear them as well. My point is that I think Ringo has potentially mixed up what he played on this song with others where he has started patterns on the floor tom. Some people will say, “but Ringo said it himself, how can you argue that?” Well, not to sound like a know it all, but my ears tell me otherwise. It’s simple enough to hear in the recording. Aside from the pattern itself, Ringo plays 8th notes on the floor tom through all the verses where you can also clearly here the lower pitch of that drum and that that is not the pitch that you hear at the very beginning of the main tom pattern. Beyond all of this, such an incredibly crafted drum part. Not just the main pattern, but the entire composition. It’s impossible to imagine this song with any other drum parts. It just wouldn’t be the same song. If you enjoy this content, please feel free to make a donation at one of the links below.
