It's less than 24-hours before opening time and the camp's flag has gone missing! The commander of the camp is none-too-pleased with this turn of events and summarily dispatches Maximus Mouse, general camp dogsbody, to retrieve the flag and save the day - failure is not an option! The game is set over four different levels, each of which consists of multiple, interconnected screens. Taking control of Maximus, the player must locate and retrieve 'Acme' crates, each of which contain part of a vehicle required to reach the next level in the search. Each screen is inhabited by a whole host of weird and wonderful enemies, including wasps, ghosts and even a horse that takes delight in depositing smelly packages of manure on top of poor Maximus! Fortunately, Maximus is a resourceful kind of mouse and help is at hand in the guise of special 'power-up' blocks that can be found in most of the screens. Whilst most of these are single-use, others can be reused, such as the rolling 8-ball. Perhaps the most useful of the blocks is the watermelon, which allows Maximus to spit seeds at his foes. Hunting for crates and fighting enemies is tiring work and Maximus has a finite amount of energy in which to complete each level. Enemies will drain energy if they make contact with Maximus, but it will also gradually drain of it's own accord, so players must be mindful to top it up by collecting a fruit block when it gets low. It's a good idea to not collect food items simply for the sake of it, as it's possible to return to a screen and use it later when energy is running low. Once all parts of the vehicle are collected, Maximus must take part in a 'Simon Says' style memory game where the objective is to construct the vehicle by pressing the different coloured arrow blocks in the correct order. Press a block in the wrong sequence and progress is reset. The game features some big, chunky sprites that look good and presentation is solid throughout. The game also features decent music and sound effects, particularly impressive considering that all of this is the work of one person. Summer Camp might not excel in any particular area, but it is well designed, fun to play and a generally solid, all-rounder worthy of your attention. #retrogaming
