This video discusses Fasting, Feasting a novel written by Anita Desai, published in 1999. The story is about the younger members of an Indian family, struggling against the traditions of the older generation. Uma the elder daughter of Papa and Mama is isolated and kept at home to do household tasks and to take care of her younger brother Arun. She is demanded to be at home. Her parents never allow her to find her own identity and neglect her basic needs. While her younger sister Aruna is praised as privileged. Aruna marries Arvind a rich, handsome man from Bombay, and settles there. She mocks and dominates her elder sister. Their brother Arun is expected to become a successful man. Papa supervises him until schooling and Arun is sent to Massachusetts, America. As an immigrant, Arun tries to find his own place in America. Similarly, Uma's isolation is compared to Melaine the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patton. Melaine's parents fail to pay attention to her eating disorder bulimic. Mr. Patton never cares for the family. The novel revolves around the themes of deprivation, abundance, and being trapped in society's claims. It also deals with male and female roles in two completely different cultures, Indian and American cultures. The title of the novel Fasting, Feasting reciprocates the difference between two different cultures. Fasting refers to India, as being rural and traditional, while Feasting refers to America as being urban and modern. Major characters of the Novel: Indian family: Mama and Papa - parents of Uma, Aruna, and Arun.
