It was a customized version of the M16A1 and the M4 carbine, featuring a shorter barrel and a collapsible stock that allowed it to be used in cramped spaces. The M4A1 has a direct impingement gas system, ambidextrous fire control, and accessory rails on top of the upper receiver and handguard for mounting optics and accessories. The M4A1 shares about 80% of its components with the M16A2 rifle, making it easy to use for anyone familiar with the M16 or M4. The M4A1 fires a 5.56 NATO cartridge from standard 30-round magazines, and its rate of fire can range from 700-950 rounds per minute, depending on specific conditions.
