Since 2018, the IRT Flushing Line, which has since 2003 been known for being the final revenue service resting place for the famous last “Redbird” painted subway cars of the New York City Subway, has not ran a singular consist of SMEE-type subway cars in “regular” passenger service. This is due a few reasons, from the implementation of CBTC and ATO across the entire line to the removal of the final R62A cars from Corona Yard during the same time, the 7 line has been generally entirely comprised of new technology R188 trains, even for Mets game openers. However, on April 4th, the NYTM set up a trip following a recent similar event for the Yankee’s that included a trip on the Low-V subway cars built for IRT and the Train Of Many Colors behind it, that was instead intended to cater to the Mets. The Mets opener however was configured differently, and instead of the continuation of using the Train Of Many Colors, the NYTM had repainted one more pair of R33ML’s (previously a cooperate scheme pair, 9206-9207), in order to comprise a train to be 8 cars worth of strictly Redbird scheme classic painted IRT SMEE cars. This set was made up of 2 R33ML’s, 1 relatively newly restored R36ML, and 1 R36WF. On one end R33ML’s 9206-9207 lead, while on the other end R36WF 9586-9587 lead. Between that, R33ML’s 9068-9069 and R36ML’s 9542-9543 were also present. Notably, this R36ML pair is the only remaining out of a measly 34 car fleet. While not being an accurately sized 11 car set, this set of Redbirds was placed into early 7 Express service from 34th Street-Hudson Yards to Mets-Willets Point, making all intermediate express stops, even despite the construction changes. With this trip, this gave riders a blast back to 2003 with a revenue service express ride on the 7 line on a few of some of the last type of Redbird cars that operated through 2003, into the final run that took place in November of that year. After the trip to Willets was concluded, the train made a return to Coney Island Yard with all staff on board and all Mets fans and buffs dropped off, going via the Brighton Line instead of the Sea Beach Line where the train originated its journey from. This trip was primarily recorded from within 1964 St. Louis Car Company R36ML car 9542. #mtasubway Video Clips Taken: April, 4th, 2025. Instagram: / emperor_of_nyc Enjoy!
