Hypospadias is a congenital birth defect in which the urethra, the tube that carries urine and sperm outside the body is not located in its usual position i.e. the tip of the penis, but is instead located on the underside of the penis. The exact cause of this condition is not clearly known, though increased vegetarianism and hormones present in our food are suspected to be the underlying causes. Usually it is only a developmental problem and does not necessarily indicate a problem in other urinary system. Surgery is the most common method of treatment, done usually when the boy is between the ages of 3-18 months old. What are the different types of Hypospadias? Hypospadias is a congenital defect with a wide spectrum. 80% of cases are mild with the opening just below where it should be. However around 20% of the cases are more severe with the opening present in the shaft or even the scrotum. This form of hypospadias is often associated with a bend in the penis.
