THE VIDEO: It was my deep privilege to travel to Peru this spring, to the Sacred Valley - an area in the high Andes mountain range and the territory of the Quechua people. I lived near Pizac for a month, in the foothills of the huge mountain range that surrounds you on all sides. And in the process of living there something got cleaned, cleared. Something shifted. I thought it would be worth doing some photos with a local photographer and at the end of the day, we did a few takes for a potential music video. I didn’t know that the photographer - Lorenna Martin - would be so skilled and that she would capture so magically the vibe of the song through her lens… but when I got the rushes back to Dario and Annaka (who have directed all the videos in the last year and make up North Window Productions) they loved them too and were able to edit a classic simple, lo-fi, rock video that perfectly suits the optimism and freedom of the song. THE SONG: Things linger…. In the soul, in the fabric of the soul. Wounds picked up in ancient battles, might never heal in this life and who knows, from what science tells us we hand down both our physical and emotional trauma to our descendants. The funnel leads to us and we take it on as ours and it can feel too much to bear. Until you get it. Until one day it comes to you. Like a life-affirming riff you’ve never played before that’s been staring you in the face every time you’ve played an E chord. One finger moves a space away from normal…. And you hear something you’ve never heard quite like that before. Is it you doing it? Or is it true that there is something greater than ourselves? In this time of grand cynicism and wariness, fear and betrayal of ourselves, is it possible that something so pure and true can wing it’s way through in the shape of a life-affirming riff, in the form of some simple poetry that carries just enough meaning to make you smile and dance? That was my experience of Dark Days Are Over coming through in the spring a year ago as I emerged from my dark winter of the soul where all my concepts of meaning and purpose had been pushed to the brink. The conclusion I’d reached was Just Do It. Yep. The 90’s Nike slogan had been what I’d got from my dance with despair. And my friends - it works. Just fucking do it. Not why, or who will listen, or who cares, or what’s the point - Just do it. I started releasing my songs again. I got a band together. I started an alcohol free music night serving cacao in a community where this was unheard of. And then - this. This riff started coming through and after the winter I’d had I am happy to tell you I cried as this song poured out onto the page. Once again the floodgates were open. Spirit had decided I had done my work for now and this was the fruit. I didn’t know it would lead to ten more songs in as many weeks, one a week almost like clockwork.
