This video discusses quality policy statement 5.2 of ISO 9001 Standard. This clause consists of two sub-clauses: 5.2.1 Establishing the quality policy and 5.2.2 communicating the quality policy This video will explore the first part: establishing the policy. While this element is quite simple, many companies go to the limits with their policies: the short and the long ones. A couple of companies I worked with took the "short quality policy" approach to the extreme. One of the policies read: "I improve the Quality of Patient Care and all things [Company name]." I bet you are questioning if I forgot a line or two or simply made this up. No, folks, I did not make it up, and I did not misspell or remove a single word from this sorry example, except for the company name! Another gem in my quality policy collection read: "Quality is Paramount." That's it. Needless to say, such ridiculous examples did not meet the standard's requirements and provided zero value to those companies. Both companies should have read Quality Policy Statement 5.2 before creating their policies. Another extreme some companies go to in creating their quality policies is cocktails that include Fragments of a mission statement Claims that they are the world's leaders Pieces of the company's history and values References to products and services And many, many others. You may find such wordy examples on the internet in abundance. A link to one such work of art is below. Check it out – very educational on how not to write policies. Now, when we know what not to do, let's start developing our perfect Lean quality policy, meeting the requirements of quality policy statement 5.2. We will transform each standard requirement into a commitment in our policy. Top management shall establish, implement, and maintain a quality policy that: a) is appropriate to the purpose and context of the organization and supports its strategic direction. In response, our policy reads: Top management confirms that this policy Is appropriate for the purpose and context of the organization per the Context Matrix and supports the organization's strategic direction per the Mission Statement The following requirement is b): the policy provides a framework for setting quality objectives. Our policy responds: "The organization sets and reviews its Quality Objectives through the Management Review Process." And so on. Following this model, we can establish a quality policy compliant with the Quality Policy Statement 5.2. s of the standard.
