Basic Electronics Series - Switches - Session 3 This video explains to you: Types of Switches and their Working and How to design a two Way Switch 1. SPST A Single Pole Single Throw (SPST) switch is a switch that only has a single input and can connect only to one output. This means it only has one input terminal and only one output terminal. 2. DPDT A Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) switch is a switch that has 2 inputs and 4 outputs; each input has 2 corresponding outputs that it can connect to. Each of the terminals of a double pole double switch can either be in 1 of 2 positions. This makes the the double pole double throw switch a very versatile switch. With 2 inputs, it can connect to 4 different outputs. It can reroute a circuit into 2 different modes of operation. 3. Tilt Switch Tilt switches are made of nonconductive tubes that have two electrical contacts and a material which acts as a conductor between the two electrical contacts. Mercury was a once commonly used conductive material but it is now less popular due to its toxicity. Other materials that can activate a tilt switch include metal balls and electric current. 4. Reed Switch A reed switch is an electromechanical switching device. The overall structure is simple. Two ferromagnetic blades that are hermetically sealed in a glass envelope. In other words, these components can exist or be used in almost any environment. Furthermore, the glass envelope has a temperature coefficient that exactly matches the Nickel Iron (NiFe) reeds.
