When German fighter ace Walter Wolfrum climbed into a captured North American P-51 Mustang, he expected to uncover its flaws. Instead, he found a clear explanation for why the Luftwaffe was steadily losing control of the skies. With 137 victories flying the Messerschmitt Bf 109, Wolfrum’s assessment of America’s premier WWII fighter surprised his superiors. After years in the cramped cockpit of the Bf 109, he described the Mustang’s interior as almost “disconcerting” in its space and visibility — yet he openly acknowledged it was “a fine airplane.” Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin and built around a revolutionary laminar-flow wing, the P-51 had the range and performance to escort Allied bombers deep into German airspace — all the way to Berlin. By 1944, many Luftwaffe pilots avoided Mustangs whenever possible. Even Hermann Göring is said to have admitted: “When I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the jig was up.” What surprised you most about how German aces viewed Allied aircraft?
