As soon as I learned you could peel holographic window film off cured resin I wanted to do something bold with it. Experimentation showed me that it works best when flat, and that it's hard to get the film to take any other shape anyway. I also found that it worked best for wall art if it was black rather than transparent - its better transparent if you can hang it in a window. So anyway I came up with a few designs and settled on a hex pattern with clear colored resin in between. To make the rainbow colored resin pop i went for a mirror background. I picked up 6 of these mirrors for 10 bucks at home depot as an impulse buy - thats cheaper than any canvas or aluminum board! Downside is they are heavy and I worry about breaking them... The result is great, although when you get light reflecting off the mirror through the clear resin, the hexes are all shining and glittering too and it kind of melts your brain a little. The hexes came out ok, although I'd have preferred them a bit blacker, even though I used a huge amount of color in there. I think I'm getting some light reflecting through and back off the mirror and so the holographic effect is actually a bit much sometimes (didn't think I'd be saying that!). I had intended to cut the hexes out with a knife or even a pair of scissors, but the Total Boat resin is new to me and cured way faster than the other brand I use , meaning I had to use a saw to cut them. worked out ok in the end and i'm pleased with how they look. Previously (last week) I tried this same thing but using black mica as the colorant. That was a disaster as the mica reflected all the light and killed the effect. The hexes looked grey instead of black and it was just a bit meh. So I started over with the alcohol ink. Anyway, i really hope you like it and can take something from it. I realize it wont be to everyone's taste, but if you get some inspiration or an idea you'd like to try using a similar method, let me know in the comments below.
