The eastern black walnut, Juglans nigra, is one of the best known and most easily recognized of our native nut producing trees. It has a large native range and is economically important not only for the high value lumber it provides, but also for the delicious nuts which are wild harvested. Black walnut is also ecologically important as a host plant for butterfly and moth caterpillars and black walnuts are also fed upon by those wildlife species that can get into the tough shell. There are also many other uses for the black walnut that range from providing natural dye to shell grit that is used in a variety of industrial processes, including one I bet you would have never guessed. One of the phytochemicals produced by black walnut is even being researched as a cancer treatment! There is truly more than meets the eye when it comes to this awesome hard mast producing native tree. =========================== Connect with us! ============================= Blog: https://www.backyardecology.net/blog Podcast: https://www.backyardecology.net/podcast Facebook: / backyardecology Good Old Snail Mail: Grassy Roads LLC PO Box 652 Glasgow, KY 42142-0652 =========================== Help support the channel!! ============================= Purchase our book: Attract Pollinators and Wildlife to Your Yard - 15 Free and Easy Ways: https://shannontrimboli.com/shop/ Patreon: / backyardecology Or you can give a one-time donation at: PayPal Donate: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s...
