Captain Frederick Benteen's role at the Battle of the Little Bighorn remains controversial to this day. Here we cover the Yellowstone Campaign of 1873, the Fort Laramie Treaties, and the Black HIlls Expedition of 1874 (and the ousting of illegal prospectors Benteen will attempt in 1875) and how all of these events pave the way to the the Little Bighorn fight. Through it all, Kate raised (and lost) children. She and young Freddie followed Benteen to rough forts out in the Dakotas, and traveled when he was tasked with Reconstruction duties in the South. Their marriage and the letters they shared give incredible insight into what it was like to be a member of the US military community on the frontier during the Indian Wars.
