In October 2024, I encountered a remarkable singer from San Francisco. I knew, of course, that she was an outstanding vocalist—but I could not have anticipated the magnitude of her artistry, nor the almost divine depth of her musical intelligence. In our most recent work—an arrangement of the jazz standard “Four”, originally composed by Miles Davis—a piece Scheherazade had performed several years ago in a breathtaking a cappella rendition, she reveals the full scope of her genius. What unfolds here is not merely interpretation, but revelation. Scheherazade’s voice moves with astonishing authority and freedom: rhythmically fearless, harmonically lucid, and emotionally sovereign. She does not sing the music—she inhabits it. Each phrase breathes intention, each silence carries weight, and every inflection feels inevitable, as though the composition itself were momentarily reborn through her vocal presence. I found myself utterly spellbound by the sheer spellcraft of her performance. Compelled by that moment, I immediately wrote and recorded the complete arrangements together with our English and Italian ensemble collaborators. The result now stands before you: the single version of this work, drawn from a longer and more expansive interpretation that will appear on our forthcoming album. This recording is, above all, a testament to Scheherazade’s extraordinary vocal mastery—her command of jazz language, her fearless musical imagination, and her rare ability to transform a canonical standard into something profoundly personal, timeless, and transcendent.
