Enslaved on a British cannabis farm was nominated for the Refugee Reporting Award at the 32nd Annual One World Media Awards. -- Find out more about all of the nominees and winners of the One World Media Awards 2020: awards.oneworldmedia.org.uk -- Annie Kelly spent 18 months following the story of Minh, who was trafficked from rural Vietnam to a makeshift cannabis farm in northern England at the age of 15. Minh relates in his own words his dangerous, violent and terrifying journey. The UK government has positioned itself as a global leader in the fight against modern slavery. Kelly exposes the systemic failings of the UK criminal justice system in its treatment of trafficking victims. When police raided the cannabis house and found Minh inside, instead of being identified as a victim he was treated like a criminal, starting a chain of events that would see him illegally detained in prisons and immigration removal centres. Through Minh’s story, Kelly also explores the psychological impact of detention at the hands of the state, highlighting how many hundreds are facing the same fate. Credit: Annie Kelly
