Discover Southerness in Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland. Southerness Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland unusually is mostly square, the lighthouse overlooks the Solway Firth, with views to the south of the Lake District. built in 1749 to assist the passage of ships through the Firth towards the Nith Estuary. The route would once have been busy with goods coming from Liverpool and Ireland. Renovated in 1805 by the famous engineer Robert Stevenson it remained in use until 1936 and is now open to visitors during the summer Not far from Southerness is Powillimount beach which belongs to the Arbigland Estate but is free to visit head along the beach to the west a little and you come to the impressive Thirlstane Arch a natural feature formed in a ridge of sandstone the rocks that are visible on the shore were formed during the carboniferous period 340 million years ago when the earth's climate was wet and warm,.the layers built up formed into sandstones, limestones and mudstones, The folds and ridges that have formed amazing patterns and are fascinating. there are a lot of fossils in the area which makes it a great place to bring kids on a hunt.
