This short documentary by the Islamic Arts Society features Islamic art in the Bayou City. Houston is the most culturally diverse city in the United States, but little is known about its hidden gems of Islamic art. The film, prepared by Houston-based artists, was aired during the 11th annual Islamic Arts Festival in November 2024, the largest festival of Islamic arts in America. The festival is free and serves as an interfaith melting pot. Focusing on Islamic art hotspots in Houston will add to the cultural identity of Houston and promote our city as a tourist destination for people interested in arts and culture. Though Houston is well known for its ethnic and cultural diversity and its international links, little is known about the over 250,000 people of Islamic faith who inhabit this great city. Houston is home to not only indigenous but also immigrant Muslim communities that hail from different continents, races, and ethnicities. The Islamic Arts Society focuses on “Islamic Art,” not the Islamic faith, and we propose spotlighting the “Islamic Art” hotspots in Houston. The documentary will not only enhance the cultural identity of those who live in this city but will also attract people from other cities to visit Houston and discover what it offers in terms of cultural diversity. The project will feature works of “Islamic Art’ on display at the various Mosques and community centers in and around Houston that are often hidden from public view. In addition, we will also focus on the newly inaugurated “Art of the Islamic Worlds” collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, one of the largest such collections in the country. Islamic Arts Society aims to share the rich heritage of Islamic Arts. The society organizes events to celebrate our culture and promote the positive image of our community among Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Art is a common language and binds diverse communities. By promoting Islamic arts, we hope to promote mutual understanding and to enrich a diverse and inclusive Houston and broader American community together.
