This video shows two different Neurologic Music Therapy approaches: The first approach shows motor movement rehabilitation, specifically the beginning of PSE (patterned sensory enhancement) with a client with a spinal cord injury who’s objective is to increase wrist/hand/finger strength, dexterity and increase optimum fine movement patterns that will make everyday functional tasks more manageable. The piano is being used to facilitate exercises specific to his needs. Rhythm (a metronome) will next be integrated into the exercises and used as a stimulus for re-learning these patterns of movement. The second approach shows speech & language rehabilitation, specifically OMREX (Oral Motor & Respiratory Rehabilitation) and TS (Therapeutic Singing) with a client with a brain injury who has a tracheostomy but uses a speaking valve. His objective is to develop greater breath control, encourage swallowing, stimulate oral motor skills, encourage vocalisations, singing and speech and promote voice projection. The client was a folk musician prior to his brain injury & was part of a folk band who toured venues & produced a number of recordings. Music is a huge motivator for him so music led exercises have had a positive impact on his rehabilitation.
