BBC radio broadcast from the chapel of King’s College Cambridge, 18 July 1956, with the chapel choir, directed by Boris Ord, with Hugh McLean (organ). This upload is a very rare BBC transcription LP of the broadcast. The BBC produced transcription discs for overseas radio stations from the 1930s onwards, recording them directly onto 78s or LPs from “live” broadcasts. The main reason that this particular Evensong was recorded was that it was the first performance of Howell’s St Paul’s Service. However, transcription discs could not hold as much information as traditional LPs, which is why the Lessons and the anthem were not included here. Introit: Let my prayer come up (John Blow) Preces: Thomas Tomkins Psalms 93 and 94 Lessons: 2 Chronicles 18, vv. 5-27; Second Lesson: St. Luke 16, vv. 1-13 Canticles: St. Paul's Service (Herbert Howells) Lord's Prayer: Robert Stone
