Yamamoto Shugoro (June 22, 1903 - February 14, 1967) was a Japanese novelist. Real name: Shimizu Satomu. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture. After graduating from Nishimae Elementary School in Yokohama, he lived as an apprentice at Yamamoto Shugoro Shoten in Kobikicho, Tokyo. In 1926, his novel "Sumadera Fukyo" was published in Bungeishunju, which became his literary breakthrough. His novel "Nihon Fudoki" was nominated for the Naoki Prize in the first half of 1943, but he firmly declined the award. He is known for his period novels and historical novels that depict the suffering of samurai and the sorrow of ordinary people from the perspective of ordinary people, and was especially highly praised for the many masterpieces he wrote in his later years.
