Common 3.6 Pentastar Engine Problems: 3 Typical Issues That May Affect Performance. In this video I will talk about common 3.6 Pentastar engine problems. Here’s a detailed breakdown: The 3.6 Pentastar engine powers several 2011 and newer Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep models. It promises a balance of performance, reliability, and efficiency. With that said, this engine faces some issues. Here are the top three problems: Rocker arm failure. Rocker arms in the cylinder head can fail, leading to a ticking noise. When your engine experiences this problem, you may notice the following: Engine misfire. Ticking. The manufacturer issued a 2014 bulletin with instructions on how to diagnose this issue. The recommended steps include: Remove some components to access the Rocker arm. Inspect the rocker arm roller bearings for worn or missing needle bearings. Locate and replace the collapsed lash adjusters. Left cylinder head failure. Some 3.6 Pentastar engines produced between 2011 and 2013 experienced cylinder head failures. These cylinder heads overheat due to faulty valve seats. Drivers observed the following symptoms when this happened: Engine misfires. Ticking. Loss of power. Check engine light. The manufacturers fixed this issue using hardened valve seats and guides. They also extended the 3.6 Pentastar engine warranty to 150,000 miles or 10 years on the affected models. Cooling system issues. The cooling system issues arise from the sand-casting method used to make the Pentastar engines. During this process, sand deposits are left in the engine, which, unfortunately, manufacturers failed to properly clean before installing the cylinder head. Over time, these sand deposits migrated to the cooling system, where they created sludge and caused cooling system issues. You’d notice the following: An overheating engine. Issues with your AC and heater. Coolant leaks. Check engine light and error codes. To address these issues, bring your car to the dealership. They’ll replace the problematic part.
