Hello my name is Inspector Shaheen Baber, I work for police Scotland in the National Safer Communities department. My job is to safeguard all communities. Today I'm going to talk about religious hate crime. Religious hate crime is where a person or a group is targeted because of their faith or their perceived faith. Anti semitism, Islamaphobia, sectarianism are all terms we hear of regularly. The common factor is however the targeting of a person because of their faith or perceived faith. Scottish Government reports suggest that almost 63% of of the population of Scotland identify with a religion. In one year 2014-2015 Police Scotland received almost 7,000 hate crime reports. Over 10% of which are targeted because of religion. We believe that religious hate crime is under reported. This means that there are lots of people being targeted or victims of hate but do not report it to the police. Reporting such crimes to the police will help to address the issue, reporting may bring offenders to court and reporting may stop others becoming victims in the future. If you feel you are being targeted then REPORT it. if you know of someone who is being targeted then also REPORT it. If you are targeting someone we ask you to STOP IT, if not you will find you will become our target very soon. Together we can make a difference. Scotland no place for prejudice.
