Himachal ka Tabahinama is a 20-minute film by the Himdhara Collective, an environment justice research and action group. It documents people’s voices from two valleys of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, in the aftermath of the flash floods that hit the region on August 1, 2024. The compilation foregrounds how dams and other risky infrastructure projects exacerbated disaster impact in a topographically dynamic and climatically vulnerable terrain. Through grounded testimonies, the film captures the nature of losses and reveals the uneven geographies of risk. Even as the state’s disaster governance apparatus grapples with the compounding disasters, residents emerge as first responders, engaging in rescue, relief and rebuilding. The film invites viewers to reflect on what it means to get caught in a cycle of disasters and how the question of getting life and livelihoods ‘back on track’ looms large for disaster-impacted residents—not just in Kullu, but across a state increasingly shaped by unexplainable and trying realities.
