Peru expects to export 100,000 tons of avocados in the near term annually, thanks to the protocol signed in May by both sides during Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Lima, the growers’ union reported Friday. The increment might start in September with 10,000 to 15,000 tons of export of this national fruit, worth over 30 million U.S. dollars, according to the Peruvian Association of Agricultural Producers Unions (SFGA). Within three to four years, the total amount will rise to 100,000 tons per year, equaling those exported to the United States and Europe combined, said SFGA. Meanwhile, Chinese experts will come to Peru to visit the fields and the packing process, it added. Currently, in terms of fresh fruits, Peru mainly provides China with table grapes, cranberries, pecans, pomegranates, mangoes and citrus. Peru now reserves about 18,000 hectares of land for avocado plantation and the total production stood at 176,000 tons in 2014. The avocado production of Peru grew at an annual rate of 12 percent and 95 percent was exported for around 300 million U.S. dollars.
