E.P. 01: "Why Democracy? | Hari Sharma on Populism & Pluralism | National College Dialogue Series"

We had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Hari Sharma, a prominent Political Analyst, to National College, a Kathmandu University Affiliate, for the inaugural session of our Dialogue Series focusing on Contemporary Politics and Society. The session, titled "Why Democracy? Pluralism in the Age of Populism," was held on 30th May 2025 and sparked engaging discussions among students. Mr. Sharma, whose impressive career includes significant roles in both academia and government, offered valuable perspectives on the development of political ideas, technology, and governance. Drawing on his vast experience—as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister GP Koirala (1991-93, 1997-98, 1999-2001), Political Advisor to Nepal’s first President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, and as a consultant for cabinet reforms in Afghanistan (2006/07)—he illustrated the differences between historical and contemporary governance practices. With 15 years of academic experience at institutions such as Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu College of Management, and Kathmandu University, along withbeing a Fulbright Scholar at Cornell University, Mr. Sharma engaged students by discussing the impact of technological advancements on political participation and societal perspectives. He also recounted his educational background, holding Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science from Panjab University, India, and Tribhuvan University, Nepal, underscoring the critical thinking needed in today's era of populism. The session motivated our students to contemplate the challenges and possibilities democracy faces in the current landscape.
