"Cry of the Martyrs" | Revelation 6:9–17

In this sermon from Revelation 6:9–17, we see what is happening in heaven while God’s people suffer on earth. As the Lamb opens the fifth and sixth seals, the souls of martyred saints cry out for justice, asking, “How long, O Lord?” Their prayers are not forgotten or ignored—God hears, vindicates His people, and assures them that judgment will come at the appointed time. The passage reveals that the prayers of the persecuted saints are themselves part of God’s judgment, as He prepares to bring covenantal wrath upon those who rejected Christ and shed innocent blood. Using familiar Old Testament prophetic imagery, the opening of the sixth seal depicts the collapse of an old order through divine judgment, echoing the words of Jesus and the prophets concerning the coming destruction upon Jerusalem. This text calls believers to trust God’s justice, to take comfort in His sovereign timing, and to remain faithful in suffering.
