The destruction of a ship is the latest in a series of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes against Russian ships and naval facilities that have helped break Moscow’s blockade of the Black Sea. According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, about a quarter of Russian combat ships on the Black Sea have been destroyed or damaged as a result of these strikes. The Black Sea, a large inland sea situated in Southeastern Europe, has been a staging ground for wars for centuries. Since Catherine the Great annexed Crimea in 1783, Russia has sought warm water ports in the region due to their year-round navigability. This historical quest has often pitted Russia against the Ottoman Empire and later Turkey over access to the Black Sea. In this episode of How We Got Here, our host, Jan Darasz, along with our guest Konrad Zasztowt from the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw analyses how the Black Sea region became where civilizations, ideas and religions have clashed. #TVPWorld Bringing you all the latest daily news and updates, TVP World is Poland's first English-language channel where you can find world news as seen from the Polish perspective and the latest news from the CEE region.
